Summary :
When a shadow process in Oracle consumes excessive CPU and accelerates rollback segment growth, the system may experience delays during "shutdown immediate." This behavior is linked to a rare issue identified in Oracle code from version 6.0.27 onwards, primarily noted under a single customer incident. The issue revolves around a potential infinite loop triggered while adding a free extent to the Oracle FET$ table, significantly increasing REDO operations on the I_TS# index associated with the C_TS# table. A specific fix was developed for Oracle 8.1.7.3 for an affected SAP customer, but broader updates were deferred until the general release of Oracle 8.1.7.4 and 9.2.0.1 patch sets.
