SAP Note 20577 - Cpio cannot backup files larger than or equal to 2 GB

Component : Database Administration with Oracle -

Solution : https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/20577 (SAP Service marketplace login required)

Summary :
In the SAP environment, backup processes using 'cpio' for files >=2GB face operational limitations, leading to incomplete or unsuccessful backups. This issue is particularly problematic on older Linux distributions where 'cpio' may misleadingly indicate a successful backup. Other operating systems terminate the process with error codes like BR278E and BR279E, signaling a failure in copying. The root cause is 'cpio's' inherent inability to handle large files. The recommended workaround involves switching the backup command to 'dd' in the init.sap configuration (tape_copy_cmd = dd), as outlined in related SAP Notes 71058 and 96898.
