SAP Note 19909 - Setting compress_cmd for compress = only

Component : Database Administration with Oracle -

Solution : https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/19909 (SAP Service marketplace login required)

Summary :
Despite setting the init.sap tape_size parameter and executing a dummy compression, users report that cpio reaches the tape's physical end, leading to potential backup termination errors. The discrepancy arises because the dummy compression's rates don't align with actual hardware compression rates. SAP advises using the "-b 12" option in the compress_cmd (e.g., compress_cmd = "compress -b 12 -c $ > $") to match hardware compression more closely, enhancing file distribution and media utilization. For SAP Release 4.0 under Windows NT, the recommended command is "mkszip -l 0 -c $ > $".

Key words :
enable optimal file distribution, actual hardware compression rates, hardware compression rates, open /dev/tty, additional key words, compression rates determined, data media utilization, dummy compression run, sap tape_size parameter, sap parameter compress_cmd
