Summary :
During the Software Update Manager (SUM) upgrade of SAP NetWeaver from version 7.1 or higher to 7.3, issues arose where the additional application server instance on UNIX could not be started. The failure was observed during the START-SYSTEM step. The issue traced back to the Internet Communication Manager (ICM) which couldn't initiate, as evidenced by error and warning logs in the dev_jstart file indicating a SIGCHLD signal and exit code errors. The root cause was identified as the retention of an outdated shared memory layout post kernel upgrade, interfering with the new ICM's functioning. The recommended solution is to clear the old shared memory via provided commands and restart the necessary services to ensure proper application server function.
